Linux Hpux NFS file locking

I have a linux (Suse 10.1) NAS (Networked Attached Storage) pc, with an HP j5000 workstation running HPUX 10.20 mounting a directory on the NAS, via NFS. I can mount the linux directory from the j5000, using the automounter. (Using direct NFS mounts gives errors - when you change down 1 directory from the mountpoint, that directory becomes root). Everthing looks ok, except that file locking doesn't work - I get the error -fcntl: No locks available.

This is also the case with hpux11.11. I've tried the standard fix, adding the insecure_locks directive to the linux export arguments, but no joy.

Any help/tips appreciated.

As I recall 10.20 only did NFS Version 2. 11.x does NFS Version 3. There is an nfs version 4 (fstype = nfs4 instead of nfs) in newer Linux flavors.

On 10.20 you couldn't specify version. On 11.x you can with the version= flag. Have a look at mount.nfs on your 11.x system (no such animal on 10.20 unfortunately.)

At a prior job I was at we found NAS had issues with flock on our RH EL servers. I think those were AS 2 but might have been AS 3. For most purposes this didn't matter but there were some things where the app required flock so we had to move it off to local storage. It is that experience that makes me shy away from NAS solutions now though I suspect things have gotten better since then (2 years ago).
