Linux Hostname in Linux DNS List

Hi,

I have UcLinux embedded linux. Hostname is updated in that machine. when I try to capture with MAC scanner tool the host name is not showing only IP address and MAC address is showing.

Following are the details:

DNS - Linux DNS
Client - Embedded Linux
No DDNS in the network

Note: Some IP phones are connected in the same network by which the hostname is shown in MAC scanner tool.

Please assist me how to go ahead to achieve the host name in the MAC scanner tool.

Thanks,
Gopal.

Hello,

Have you got any FW solution installed on your equipment ? Many ethernet interfaces ? Which tool do you use to scan ?

Did I correctly understand ? You are using the scanner 'FROM' the equipment ? or from another machine ?

Thanks,

g33ky

Linux Hostname in Linux DNS

I am using Colasoft MAC scanner tool in windows machine connected in the same network.

What does FW solution means?

Two ethernet interface are there in the Linux embedded machine.

If some FW solution is implemented, your scanner might not have any answer from your Linux-box. For example, if your 53 port is closed, either the scanner will give
Quote:

No DDNS in the network
or it may also mean you don't have any DNS filled on your ethernet card configuration on your Windows client.

I guess that each interface on the Linux machine is on a different VLAN (or network ayp) ?

Could you try to do another scan test with Nmap ? (http://www.nmap.org/download) ?
Just to know more, you may have a look a the manual which describes how scanners do to get the information, especially also for Nmap (http://nmap.org/nmap_doc.html).

Hope it helped... Keep me alive about this please.

I tried executing the command "/sbin/udhcpc -H "<hostname>" -i eth1 -s /etc/default.script" in the UcLinux machine and the hostname reflected in the MAC scanner tool.

Thanks for your information.
