I am relatively new here myself, but I get the impression that the convention is that the OP asks a question, posts a survey or generally does something which might be considered interogative, and the responders then, well, respond.
In the bizarre case that this might be helpful, two of my favourite books are "The Linux Quick Fix Notebook" by Peter Harrison and "Essential System Admin" by AEleen Frisch. The first is written around Red Hat type products and I'm not a Red Hat type person, but is otherwise brilliant, or thereabouts. The second is a more general *nix book and is reassuringly thick.
I should also mention the Linux Network Administrator's Guide (sometimes called NAG), because I'm pretty sure that there is a copy of that online.
Assuming that in some way you are having one or more issues in creating a gateway/firewall, it is possible that reading a book on networking or a related subject might be helpful. Alternatively, giving some kind of clue on what part is giving you a problem, may result in a more directed answer thingy.
But then, I think that rain makes you wet, so how would I know? By the way, if "Internet" itself is a problem, there is probably very little that I can do to help. But that's normal.
try ipcop...Visit www.ipcop.org. It's a linux distro to that helps you build a firewall/gateway/VPN/DHCP/Proxy server. Lots of addons. But its also good to learn the concept.
I agree: search distrowatch dot com for "routers" and you get plenty of suitable distributions for learning purposes as well as for more advanced and even production use.

IPCop is good. Also take a look at Smoothwall. The upside to these type of firewalls is that they are already stripped down and the known issues taken care of. Plus, they have their own forums to help with any issues that may arise.
