Linux file permissions

Linux file permissions consist of controls on the user, group and others.

This is quite different from Novell and Windows where you could create large numbers of groups and assign them to a file or directory.

How do you see this? Is this a limitation or just a new way of looking at security?

How do you manage this in your environment?

it's just different (and much better at a low level... no silly databases involved), you can set a directory to be owned by a particular group easily enough, and then set the sticky bit on that directory (chmod 1777 dirname) then any file created in that directory will inherit the group of the directory itself, which is effectively the same end result is it not?

Don't know yet. I am having to re-learn file security. The approach that I took under Windows won't work here.

Thanks for the link. I will do some more research on sticky bits. The sad part is that reading by itself won't help. I just have to jump in, set up user security and test, test, test.
