I would still expect to see en entry in the dmesg log assigning a eth device, and I do not see that in your output.. ..

are you sure that's shouldn't be the ar81 Linux family driver instead of the atl1e

Odd that lspci shows attansic, and dmesg shows the Atheros ar81



LeeDaugherty, Some paragraphs in your rant would have made it more readable...
Which is why I remove Network-manager and install wicd instead.. it's a more sane application...

that bug is supposed to be fixed in kernel 2.6.24. mine is 2.6.28-13 (btw recently I updated it from 2.6.28-11! I guess that's when it must have got started! no other major change in the system)

should I install the other driver that you mentioned?

I installed the other one also ... however no luck!

I am wondering what might have caused this! it was all working well ... only change i remember is the upgrade.

btw XP shows Atheros 8132 as driver name ...

Yeah I know that bug is old.. it was the only sighting I could find that indicated the driver module name..
But hey at least you read the provided links Can't tell you how many people skip over them without bothering to look

you installed it.. what does that mean ?

after you modprobed the driver, did you check the dmesg and messages logs to see if the system showed anything ?

did you try using modinfo to see if the driver is being applied to the device ?

modinfo ar81
or
modinfo atl1e
(I can't swear to which one is for your device after reading the link michaelk provided)

if you run lspci -vv does it show either atl1e or ar81 as being used for the ethernet interface ?

I am on the verge of getting confused - I am really not sure which driver do I have and which I do not.

similar to atl1e, ar81 installation also threw following error while doing "make install" -

cannot write to /var/cache/man/cat7/atl1e.7.gz in catman mode
since it mentioned atl1e in the error, I did not change the /etc/modules that I had modified while installing atl1e. Here is how it looks

any clue folks? I am lost now!! I installed all these driver thingies ... but still it is not working ... what is wrong here? what has made the ethernet disappear?

A shot in the dark here - I certainly haven't read 20 posts.

I had this exact problem with a realtek nic. Turned out to be that the Via chipset on my board had a broken APIC. So the nic was given some half-assed irq (like 22) which it shared with three bits of the sound card, 2 bits of the usb bus, and one ide channel :-///.

The essential check: Boot windows and check the hardware interrupt it is assigned. Boot linux and see does it have that irq

cat /proc/interrupts

I got around it by adding the boot option 'noapic'. You can also find and check what irq it is asking for by interrogating the pci settings, and possibly assign it a particular interrupt in the bios setup.

lspci -vv > textfile && less textfile

Your problem, btw, is kernel based if you have the nic and no eth0. The kernel is not doping it's stuff. Logs will be informative.

I googled a bit but not able to find out the way to identify the interrupts you mentioned! Would you please help with that? I am sorry, I know a little about this.

Interesting.. notice what is missing at the very end of your lspci -vv output ? there are NO modules listed as being used for the ethernet interface..

so no driver loaded, not network.

You need to try the two options you have and see which one wakes up that interface..

The interrupts thing - the command

sudo cat /proc/interrupts
gives me this list:

I can link my eth0 with interrupt 16. lspci-vv gave the same information. Your nic would like irq 10, but what is listening?

Your kernel is not seeing the nic. ath9k does the atheros wifi, I gather. Whatever module you are using is wrong. Find the right one.

As a last resort, search the Linux Kernel Mailing List.
Search for your module by
modprobe -a <followed by a list of half a dozen modules>
ifconfig eth0
If one of them created eth0, you will not get the 'no such device' error. No need to post again until that is sorted.

I'm curious what you did before the Ethernet interface disappeared.. Since it was originally working, did you update Ubuntu ? change anything else ?

@business_kid, let me attempt that.

@farslayer, only thing I did was update ubuntu - kernel was updated from 2.6.28.11 to 2.6.28.13 (interestingly it added 2 entries in bootloader too - one for 2.6.28.11 and other for 2.6.28.13!).

I have tried that ... doesn't work. I installed it correctly - but still no luck!

mine is Atheros 8132 - seems it doesn't work for this.
