installed redhat 9, had a lovely time, and just as i predicted the troubleshooting as started a lil early. now that i've spent roughly 5 lengthy days trying to figure this out, and searching other posts, i bring my question to someone who can shed some light onto the situation. i found similiar problems, but nothing seemed like mine, and i just kept going in circles, so don't think i didn't look (only here), google, everywhere.

i'll post more info when i switch back over to my other partition so i can copy it to a floppy, it fails to resolve i'll post more in a sec, anyone willing to be helpful, i greatly appriciate it...
I have a cable connection (ethernet), and use a Realtek 8139C+ adapter. I'm supposed to use DHCP to retrieve my internet info, (ie. IP, gateway...etc...) I can put in my information using the static option, and ping that address, however the internet is not there. Nothing connects to anything (mozilla, gaim...). I've also been having some problems with the booting process. It says, "Bringing up interface ... 8139cp" I don't want to use 8139cp, I want to use 8139too. I have edited /etc/modules.conf and changed it to read, alias eth0 8139too, saved it. I hope I can provide you with enough info to make me feel stupid, and to resolve this problem.

Commands tried: noapic (as param), modprobe 8139too (what is this? i read it and thought to try it), fails to bring back up interface eth0, although loopback comes up.
When I enter the information for static IP, I can activate it. But I cannot make any connections to the internet. Once again, thanks.
ok, static ip is the way to test your driver (module) . You say you can activate it, that better than nothing :-) But still, try to get OUT of the machine, ping, telnet anything to another machine in the same subnet (let say ping 192.168.1.xxx) to make sure the interface works. I've seen a lot of situation that I was able to ping 127.0.0.1,and my own local adress but cant go out of the machine (like a bad cable...)
Also, please give us some more info about your Internet connection,, Trough a router ? A cable modem connected to the problematic NIC ??
Linux is a big part of my future. To acquire the dreams I'm after, I'm not even close to giving up. (had to get that out). I'm setup through Cable, no router. [PC]---[modem]--[internet]. Everything is fine in windows, everything works. I am able to ping 127.0.0.1, everything else, it says (off the top of my head, its hard to switch partitions...gather info...and post back) destination unreachable?!? maybe. I'll switch over later and confirm the inquery. Some reason when i boot, it still tries to use 8139cp...and tries to use... Realteck 8139 SM EZcard or something like that. But I don't have it. And I have to change it back.
Also, can you tell me how to mount my fat32 partition so I can read a couple manuals I've downloaded? And tell me why the booting paramentor "noapic" is helpful?
Those are my questions lol....thanks a big one.
I'm going to post the output from ifconfig, lsmod,
