Question Linux driver for Intel(R) PRO/100 VE

Hi,

Intel site mentions that Linux drivers are available for 2.6 and above kernels. Would the same drivers be compatible with RedHat 7 installations.

I have a Intel(R) PRO/100 VE network card installed. While installing Redhat 7, this card failed to get detected, obviously driver didn't exist for the card. Can I use Linux 2.6 drivers for this card on a RedHat system. Would there be any compatibility issues. If there are , how should I go about installing the driver.

Thanks & Rgds

Granted they're harder to find, but the driver you want is here.

(if the link doesn't work, got to http://intel.com/go/linux and search for the e100 driver.

This driver works for both 2.4 & 2.6 kernels. To build it, the easiest thin to do with Redhat is to type rpm -ta e100-<version>.tar.gz. This will build an rpm file that you can install, provided that you have the required tools to build this driver (it will tell you).

If that doesn't work, or you don't have the tools let me know. I'll figure out a way to build you a binary. I'm sure I have a copy of RH 7 lying around.

Hi,

Thank You for the reply.
I am unable to build the driver in my RedHat system as my linux version is 2.2.16-22.
The Makefiles expect version 2.4 and above. Looks like some headers are missing during the build.

What is more curious is e100.o is available in
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/e100 directory.

If I use this module
insmod e100
I get the following error
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/e100.o:init_moduleevice or resource busy
Hint:insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module paramters;including invalid IO or IRQ paramters

Am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance for any response.

Check to see if the other, non-intel supported driver eepro100 is loaded. If so, shut down networking and rmmod it.

The other possible reason for the module not working is that it doesn't detect the device ID. You can find this out if you type lspci, find out which pci device is the nic, then type lspci -n -s <pci id>. Here is an example from my system:
[tobind@razman shar-files]$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation E7205 Memory Controller Hub (rev 03)
00:00.1 Class ff00: Intel Corporation E7505/E7205 Series RAS Controller (rev 03)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation E7505/E7205 PCI-to-AGP Bridge (rev 03)
.
.
.
02:04.0 RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. SiI 3112 [SATALink/SATARaid] Serial ATA Controller (rev 02)
02:05.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5702X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)

[tobind@razman shar-files]$ lspci -n -s 02:05
02:05.0 Class 0200: 14e4:16a6 (rev 02)

The last two numbers are the vendor & device ID. Your system should be something like 8086:1055 where 8086 is the vendor (Intel), and 1055 is the device (yours may be different). Next, see if that device id is in the driver. type "fgrep 1055 /usr/src/linux/driver/net/e100.c" (change to your device id and correct path to your linux kernel source).

In the end, I think you will need to upgrade, either your kernel or the entire OS (preferrable). I think that Redhat 7 had the 2.4 kernel available as well, if you have a strong need to stay with that release.
