linux dialup connection with slackware 9.1
i live in nigeria where i subscribe to a dialup ISP.
i use a pc pIII 800Mhz which dual boots windows xp and slackware 9.1 which is about the distro that has installed the modem from my ISP.i do connect to the internet with windows xp by adding the modem as a standard 19200bps,maxspeed 115200,i also add the the init string from my ISP;(AT+CRM=1;$LGPKT=3),ISP dialup number #777 and my username and password and i get connected.when i check my connection status in windows i notice the ppp server ip doesn't not change but when i relogin client ip (assigned to me) do change, the authentication protocol is PAP.i tried using this parameters with kppp and the modem just tries to connect saying initialising modem for a long period and i have to cancel the connection.using the instruction in a tutorials my kernel version is 2.4.22 and my ppp version is 2.4.1 running /usr/sbin/pppd gives me the line of garbage and when i try this: /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS0 15200 debug connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v '' AT OK ATD#777 CONNECT '\d\c'" i get no interaction, but my log files says input /output error.there i get stuck.can someone pls offer me some advise.
thanks in anticipation

If it is the former, have you added yourself to the "dialout" group, and can you connect as root (only for testing) ? Do you see anything interesting when running the following (as root) in a separate terminal, as you try to connect:
