Linux box as a modem/router

Hi all,
In my home I have the following:

ISP modem -> TP-LINK (Wireless) -> clients received the internet connection

Can I replace this infrastructure with a machine that has a linux os (backtrack, redhat or anything else) that has a fax modem to receive the signal from the ISP and configure it like a wireless router too, so I could make my own DHCP, DNS, firewall and open my ports and close them freely without the ISP intervention.

Any ideas and explanations are welcomed or manuals to follow.

Regards
Mhm

An LQ member has put together a very good "Home Server Howto" that might answer a nubmer of your questions. The actual howto is here and the LQ thread that introduced it is here.

I don't think it covers wireless, and that might be your biggest issue. I think there has been a lot more work done with Linux acting as a wifi client than with Linux acting as an wifi access point. Although I think I have read about it being done.
