linksys usb to ethernet network adapter troubles

ive been trying to get the linksys etherfast 10/100 compact usb network adapter (Model No. USB100M) working on this pc, which is in a tower case rather than a laptop.
i found some useful information at http://www.ifrance.com/hecnar/linksys.html? but usb-uhci fails on my system. i found that uhci also failed, but usb-ohci worked.
the system now loads usb-ohci and pegasus. after both are up, it mentions a device being detected, which is followed by the following line:
usb.c:USB device 2 (vend/prod 0xbda/0x8150) is not claimed by any active driver.
somewhere in docs for people using other devices with pegasus ive seen a few times about people patching code to recognize vendors (or so i thought) but have never found any such information in my varying document and internet searches for the linksys devices. in turn, i havent patched any code; ive just edited the /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file by uncommenting the usb.ohci and pegasus lines. the only way i know to copy the startup messages to here is to cp the file /var/log/messages to a floppy and bring it here under windows, but i dont even see the line with the error in mentioned before in the log, which makes me wonder if it is a different file i need to post. as for netconfig and ifconfig, netconfig fails on the autoprobe of my network device and ifconfig only shows lo, but not eth?'s at all. i dont think either of those can work until i get the error in startup to go away. is it possible to use this device with the pegasus and usb-ohci drivers or does it only wirk if i can use usb-uhci? any help (or ideas along those lines) that you can provide would be greatly appreciated and let me know if i can provide any more useful details.
this machine is an amd266 with the usb to ethernet adapter plugged into a pci usb card rather than the onboard motherboard type. that goes to a linksys router (192.168.1.1) which then leads to my cable modem. the router provides this comp with the ip address of 192.168.1.100. im using slackware 8.1 from the iso download and its running the bare.i kernel from the setup cd. i had to run setup from the 7 boot floppies (although i skipped disk 2, the root disk, because it would just lock after it read it a bit and inserting disk 3 through 7 seemed to load things as i expected to see in the first place). thanks again.
