Hey all,

I've got a P3-450 w/ 128MB RAM running double-duty as an FTP server and router to my internal network. I just put the FTP server up earlier today, and I've got some folks downloading files right now.

My Internet connection is an ADSL line that should do 768kpbs downstream, and 128kpbs upstream. Strangely enough, I'm noticing a serious lag-time, when there are files moving upstream (people pulling data from the FTP server)--my web browsing and downloads have serious noticeable lag time. I'm not sure if it's because the FTP stuff is a bandwidth hog, or if it's just inducing a lot of latency.

FIRST QUESTION: What linux tools are available for me to determine the actual amount of bandwidth devoted to an in-progress FTP transfer?

SECOND QUESTION: What tools exist that will let me shape FTP traffic, limiting it to a set chunk of bandwidth, if necessary.

For Bandwidth shaping a lots u can use the iproute2 utility.
Its used for quality of service ( QOS ).
A decent howto is avilable on www.linuxdoc.org.
