leave the workstation on...the server dies???

Hey

I have a strange problem...when I leave on my pc overnight....I wake up to find my server/router in a non-responsive state...any ideas as to y?

Server: 486, 48Mb RAM, RH9, runnin sendmail, iptables, apache, mysql

I've considered lookin for the history of operations and possible errors that may have lead to the demise but I'm not sure which log to look in...and not sure what i lookin for.

Running ethereal or tcpdump was suggested but a problem arises in that nothing responds in de morning. The HDD light is on steady and there is no activity or response I have to hit the reset button

I estimated the "freeze up" happening between 1 and 2 hours b4 i woke up which calculates to somwhere about 5 am. This is based on the fact that IPMonster is supposed to poll IPMonster.com every 5 minutes for ip....and i was faced with about 20 notices sayin that IPMonster.com server must be down...whereas it was my only gateway to the internet that had died. Other evidence indicated an earlier time of death.

q: Any Cron jobs about that time?
a: how do i findin what time de job supposed to run?

logwatch ran and sent mail to root @ 4:03 am
but cron didn't send it's mail message.....cron report usually comes about 20 minutes later...meaning it was due @ approx 4:23...so in between these time something went drastically wrong

A large part of the cron.daily task is tripwire. I installed and setup tripwire from de onset and had this problem only a couple times before. On these occasions i was downloadin sumtin over night...but dis time....i just fell asleep and forgot the machine on....nuttin was goin on

I attempted to simulate the situation to see what really happened....however running the #run-parts /etc/cron.daily did not yield the same results....(a good thinng...but...information collected indicate that tripwire check take up upto 78 % of CPU when run....

Anyway.....this are all the facts i think....i would really appreciate any help or suggestion as to what's going on....

Thanx
