large downloads (HTTP, FTP) stall (DSL connection)

I just installed slackware 9.0 and set it up to a small LAN, but it seems that large (2 MB +) downloads seem to stall after a couple minutes and never reconnect. This seems to be a linux-specific problem, as the windows and mac nodes have no similar problem. This network uses a DHCP-running router, though I don't suspect that's the problem.

I have done some google-searching but haven't found much help. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
