Question Lan Settings

It's only few days back that I layed my hands on Linux, I installed RH8.0, Every thing went well. It recognised and installed my Lancard too.

I installed KDE as my desktop, and when I clicked on Home it showed Lan Browsing in left panel, but on clicking on it it said "Can not connect to localhost", now I checked the network configuration form Start Menu -> System Settings -> Network

Here I saw that etho is there but not activated, I changed some of the values, like ip address & subnet mask. Now eth0 is activated, but still Lan Browsing gives the same alert.

So can some one here explain me how to configure Lan Networking so that I can connect brows my other Windows Machine and vice-versa.

thanks

I take it you are wanting to setup "windows shares" so to speak. If so you need to set up samba. Search this site - there is lots of information about setting up samba. Post any problems you have in this thread and I'll do my best to help.

Actually it's not just Samba, first I want to be familiar with Linux Networking, so that If required I can install and configure Linux Local Area Network, Sharing of files and folder with other computers, sharing of Internet connections etc, and in the end Samba too.

Hope you will under stand that first I want to learn linux.

I think that "LAN Browsing" requires the "lisa" daemon to be configured and running in order to function properly.. I've had it working a few times but haven't played with it for about a year.

That is very broad in general and does not differ from any other type of network.

Well to start with

There is "My Network Places" in Win2K, what is there in Linux
There is Network and Dial-up Connections in Win2k, what's in Linux.

If explained, may be I will be able to configure Linux to atleast Show itself in lan browsing.

Take a look at LinNeighborhood:
http://www.bnro.de/~schmidjo/

> There is Network and Dial-up Connections in Win2k, what's in Linux.
In the Gnome menu: System Settings -> Network

> If explained, may be I will be able to configure Linux to atleast Show itself in lan browsing.
Just as computers don't show up on the windows network neighborhood unless you log into a domain or use "Client for Microsoft Networks". Linux won't show up unless you set samba up.

In order to do anything you will need to devise a network diagram/structure.
1) Assign IP addresses/subnet masks and gateways to each machine to suit your network.
2) Make sure the machines can ping each other
3) Install Samba (server, client and swat)
4) Install LinNeghborhood

Thanks should let you do all that you asked about.

Post any problems you have and I'll see what I can do.
