yes its a pci, dunno bout what rj45 is. there is a cable(cable similar but thicker and bigger than phone cable line) connected to pci network card which is buit in i suppose.
what do u mean by "....program ethereal use....". should i type pppoe || lcp on linux konsole?
rj-45 is what most people use on utp or ftp network cables (phonelines use rj-11)
I'm trying to understand how the cables are in your network setup
I assume you have a LAN 192.168.187.0/24 on eth0
you have some mysterious eth1
and eth2 doesn't seem to be used for anything
but the your 'internet' needs to enter also your computer, I guess it comes from a phoneline, but how is this connected to you computer or your lan?
the ethereal would be a way to test what is going on in a windows system if that is working.
It also exists in Linux since you don't have a working connection yet it is not very useful.
I looked for your broadcom 44x, but I don't have any more information about it.
maybe 'dmesg | grep eth ' can give some info about your nic
actually eth1 is for 1394 net adapter(which i obviously i dont use to connect) and eth2 is the intel pro wireless adapter(i might use but i dont have any wireless account). eth0 is broadcom 44x 10/100 integraed controller, should be something like realtek internet adapter
but where do you connect to your phone line, is there any other box? dou you know brand and type?
and maybe it's IP address, since it could be a router which is the best that can happen for you at this moment :-)
try a
ping -b 192.168.187.255 (your broadcast on eth0)
and see who responds to this ping
all i kno bout my connection is that its a pppoe, a dhcp client. there is no box involved, just a cable directly connected to my internal network card. i have username and password given by China Telcom. i use that and connect to internet. here's its detail, when i am connected to internet in windows... http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/1126/damn9pw.jpg
the pinging thing didnt work
How is you lan connected? On that same cable? is there a switch involved
I don't see why there is a 24.24.24.24 server, but maybe that is possible,
at least you know now for sure that you need to use chap authentication
I'll have to leave you now since I'll go to bed,
let me know if you discover any extra info, I know some ISP don't use standard pppoe protocol but to find out you need to test with ethereal in windows.
hey i sorta discovered that i might need WAN miniport interface. coz this is the interface i use in windows to connect internet. is there any way how to setup up wan miniport(pppoe) interface in linux??
thanks tlowk, thanks for everything.
i used rp-pppoe this time using konsole, and guess what it worked!! here is the status of the pppoe in case u are interested.
pppoe-status: Link is up and running on interface ppp0
