KPPP sometimes does not connect

My dial-up with KPPP works about 1/2 of the time. By that, I mean that 1/2 the time KPPP dials and connects instantly and I can get online. The other 1/2 of the time, it dials, tries to connect and eventually times out. Here is the log from a dial-up failure...

I had the same problem with a US robotics modem........until I configured it to use ttyS4 , then the prob went away.
