kernel recompilation

hello all ,

say i have 2.4.20 kernel i recompile and get the
2.4.20 custom version ..

now i have made changes in the source
i need to recompile again ....
doubt is:

is there a difference if i do recompiling on 2.4.20 or in 2.4.20 custom

thanks in advance ...
