Kernel files for routing?

I'm new to linux, and I need to modify the routing protocols in the linux kernel. I downloaded the kernel from kernel.org, untared it and don't know where to start looking for the relevant files.

I just need to know where to start looking in the kernel tar file for the files concerning routing, particularly in 802.11.

Also if anyone has a recommendation as to where to find more help on kernel programming and routing would be greatly appreciated.
