Kanotix firewall vs guarddog

Hi!
I use Kanotix Linux and I want to give access to ntp through firewall.
When I first installed Kanotix, I used Kanotix firewall and enabled the firewall and everything was ok. Now I want to be able to use ntp and I read on this forum that I need to open 123 port. I also read that another configuration tool exists: guarddog, so I started it and made a modification to allow ntp. Since I saved the modification the internet is not working anymore: no ping, no browser, no ntp.
I think I restored the functionality, running the Kanotix firewall again.
My questions are:
1. Why this diference between the two?
2. How to make ntp work?
