Because most Internet via Kabel Provider uses a Kabel-Modem to connect to the internet and do VoIP I do write this article.
There is now no more gateway needed if you don't connect a router with the modem.
The IP address and DNS is fetched dynamicaly over the modem direct from the provider's server.
Howto (configure the computer (router) connected directly to the modem via Ethernet)
Make sure your Ethernet card is named in the file:///etc/network/interfaces like iface eth0 (or Your-Card-Name) and no more extending lines, only this line for this
device is needed.
Type in a root terminal > " dhcpcd eth0 (or Your-Card-Name) "
- reddy ! Internet is now useable !
If you want this to be setup each time the computer boots up then add this to the file:///etc/init.d/network(ing) to the section start in a new line : " dhcpcd eth0 (or Your-Card-Name) ".
dhcpcd has a start, stop (up, down) mechanism, too. So read " info dhcpcd " for more information about that.
BTW, is "Kabel-Modem" a brand name, or just German for "cable modem"?
"Kabel-Modem" is a the same word like "cable modem".
Thanks for that hint I will try to add that word to the headline.
I think "KABEL BW" and "Kabel Deutschland" are brand names.
It is also more like a transceiver-switch than a modem so most linux user will maybe configure pppoe but that is wrong (not needed).
