iwconfig not "sticking" ?

Using slackware 8.1 (and yes, I'm a noob).

card = linksys wpc11, and I'm using the hermes.conf file that finegan has put in the forums here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=15881

I'm at work w/the laptop, so no biggie yet, but whenever I try to set the essid:

iwconfig eth0 essid myssidname,

it doesn't seem to take.

I get no errors, but then if I execute a plain "iwconfig," the essid is still blank (ESID:"").

what actual file does the iwconfig supposedly write to, and should I just try to edit that file?

hmm...actually maybe I'm just confused, and need some help with understanding.

If I type:

ifconfig eth0 up
iwconfig

then my essid DOES show up.

OK, so then I reboot, do iwconfig, and get the ESID:""

type ifconfig eth0 up
iwconfig

and now ESSID:"non-spec"

is there really just no file I can go permanently set this at?
