Is there any way I can test a port on a remote machine to see whether its open?

I'm having trouble connecting to an external mysql server on a shared host, and can't tell from the control panel whether the firewall has closed the port mysql is on.

well you can use namp to scan a box for open ports, or just telnet to the port number if it's a tcp port.

Thanks. I've tried that, and telnet is saying that it can't connect, so I guess that the port is closed.

Anyway I can double-check using PHP on the server? Its the only language I'm able to use on the box able to get outside.

Cool

Hello my friend. www.google.com is for specific searches...so the sheer volume of search results doesn't overwhelm or offend. Amen, brother. This is a very applicable index...http://tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html
