Is there a way to set a proxy for all programs?

Hi there,

I don't know if it's possible, but could someone tell me if i can set a specific proxy server so the entire system use this (don't need to configure all programs like, firefox, amsn, konqueror bla bla).

Example: i'm on machine 192.168.0.2 which access the internet using the proxy on machine 192.168.0.1. Is there a way to set all programs on 192.168.0.2 to access the internet using the proxy 192.168.0.1 without doing it by hand?

there isn't unfortunately. there are high levels ways to configure a "system wide" proxy but there is no such thing to cover every possible level of user net access, e.g. from curl to firefox. you have the standard environmental variables, http_proxy and ftp_proxy and others which used to be a reliable standard and are used by lower level apps (curl, wget etc...) but the higher levels generally do not use these. at the other end the control panelly stuff in something like gnome holds a registry-esque settings in gconf (on gnome) which is queried by applications which are part of the relevant suites.

thanks for your answer! I was expecting something like this. I have used http_proxy but i realized that not all programs were using it.
