Is My Router Borked?? DSL-2740B

Hi all,

I've been having some strange things going on with my D-Link DSL-2740b router.

All of a sudden it stopped working so gave it a re-boot and after that I couldnt connect to it either my new IP I gave it or the default.

So after 1hr of reboots and leaving it and resetting it I managed to get back in as the default factory user and settings.

Now....

After I reload my existing backup file it loads perfectly. I go back in using my existing ID and password. Then I see all is back to normal.

If I go to re-boot the thing it loses ALL settings and fails to be able to connect using either IP addresses (my own / factory). So I have to do the whole 1hrs process again to get somewhere then reload again.

So now I have got to a point where I cant reboot the thing and I hope it doesnt crash.

Any suggestions out there?????

You could try to use the option to reset the router to default settings using the little pin methode.
Perhaps there is problem with the temperature ?

I have tried that tons of times. I've tried holding the pin in whilst turning on the router to get the red power light and conencting.. this doesnt work at all.

I have even let the router cool for well over an hour.

Its up and running now but only until I have to reboot or turn it off. Then im screwed again. Weird!

Do you still have warranty?
Contact the vendor
Or perhaps an upgrade from the firmware.

maybe you've been hit by a router worm? do you have remote administration turned on? the most recent exploit relies on remote administration being active..

Noo way! I always lock everything down. I have 3 firewalls running and 2 anti-virus programs running - 1 for my windows machine and 1 for my Linux server.

Its a fairly old bit of kit in my collection. Had it a few years now so no warranty.

I'm running the most up to date firmware that I know of. (v2.61)

I just wanted to mention (don't know if it will help you) in post#3 it isn't clear if your pin-hole reset button method is actually resetting the device, or if it is not resetting.

On both my routers, in order to reset them using the little button, I need to push the button in while the router is ON, then while holding the button in, un-power the router, wait a few seconds, then power the router back on, still while holding the button. Finally, once I see all the lights flashing (self test?) I release the button.

I have a GNet Gateway, and a Belkin wireless, and they're both like this.

Hi,

Yes I have been trying all those instructions you mentioned ie the pin method.

I have now reverted back to and older firmware which still has no effect. It works if I just dont reboot the unit.

crappy.. Y'know, something occurred to me.. You mention it's kinda older, so:

1) maybe the Flash-ROM is just dead, period, and it won't retain its stuff once powered off or reset, or:

2) I wonder if there's any sort of (Lithium) battery inside it? Like a BIOS battery? Maybe it's dead. Now, I've taken apart my older GNet router, and there was no battery inside there, but who knows? Maybe some do?

Unfortunately, if there's no (dead) battery in there you can replace, it looks like you ought to consider a new router :/

well i can give some advice from something i experienced..

i have a 2 meg adsl connection that services around 20 clients. so not so big. originally it had a philips adsl2+ router attached to it, which was performing nat. once a month we had to hard reboot the router because it wouldnt completely flush the nat table. this started to occur more frequently and i started to get annoyed that the customers were calling and comlaining more frequently.. Someone even suggested i put a timer on the power supply so the philiips would reset once every 24hours..

i asked around, and found someone had a speedtouch 502t they were prepared to part with. i was like thats going to be shitty. but i took it anyway, cause i needed to stop the customers complaining.. So, what i did was i set the speedtouch in bridge mode, and put dd-wrt on a spare linksys wrt54gl we had. i havent had to reset either device in the last 3 months, and the customers have stopped complaining!

My newest router here is a wireless Belkin F5D7230-4 which has 4 wired cat5 ports as well. It's about 2 yrs old now, and/but has been working great the whole time. Web-admin page in it is very complete and easy to use. Currently we are using it as an AP (Access Point mode) for the laptop & bedroom desktop machine.

Not sure how much it cost when new, or if the identical model is still available or has been succeded by a newer model.

Belkin is a good choice
I have the Belkin F5D8233-4
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=372043

I had a cisco router before, but since the speed of my conection went from 4 Mbps to 24 Mbps,
I had to buy a new one, or upgrade the cisco.(cisco connected at 5Mbps at a 24 Mbps line)
Belkin had the best price and features.
