is it possible to find the ip address of the computer to whom i am chating online


my friend says he is always online from his own computer at home . so i want to make sure that if he is online from his own home or not . is it possible to find the macaddress and/or ip address of the machine through which he is talking with me.

setup ethereal (now called wireshark), it will capture all network traffic, you will be able to see what ip address the chat packets are coming from.
might be a bit confusing to start with but you will soon recognise what its doing.

On IRC you can use the /whois <nickname> command. That will show you the ip.

Won't the chat packets originate from the chat server and not the client? When my girlfriend comes online I'll try this out (cuz I know her IP address). I've never done any "real" detective work with ethereal but I suppose this would be a great start.

Edit: As a side note... doesn't sound like much of a friend if you need to find other ways of finding out if s/he's home or not...

know the ip whom u chat

u just use wireshark to know the ip of a person whom u r chatting

but its useful if u read carefully the data transfer from the ip and connection type

Please don't drag up old threads like this. This one was started in 2006, so it's unlikely that the OP cares any more.

it's only possible if the person u wish to see the ip is on same network or router.
