well, i'm having the same problem with mine, i think it's the intel's driver that not yet support monitor mode yet, but i'm not sure, one way is to get another card(which i did) for using monitor mode. just can't wait until they add monitor mode and master mode support(if they'll ever do that)
I'd be real tempted to just re-install with the latest ipw2200 version. According to their website there were a number of fixes to monitor mode in version 1.05. As for finding out what version you have, maybe have a look in the output of dmesg. It might say something when the module is loaded.
I just installed kismet with my 2200 and everything's up running fine; I didn't have to touch the card or put it into monitor mode manually. Make sure to edit your kismet.conf file to the appropriate settings (mine were ipw2200,eth1) so kismet knows what to do with your card.
