iptables ssh priority?

Hello, i have this little question for you guys.

i have my network with a adsl-line at 0,5mbit where i route the lan and the internet through a linuxbox usin iptables. no special rules in the iptables (apart for a portforwarding or two).
Now it's like this since my brother and others on the LAN uses DC++ and stuff like that a lot the connection can get pretty slow. so now i wonder if there is some way to prioritate a port or service? like, i want to make a reservation for ssh (or port 22, no matter) to keep some bandwith for itself over (5kb/s or something) when things get rough. even better would be if those 5kb/s could be used by dc++ when ssh is not used.

uh, hope you understand what i am talking about
help would be aprreciated! thanks!

Yes, there's a solution. I prefer HTB (http://luxik.cdi.cz/~devik/qos/htb/) but there are more available.

You could also try to set some rules in the iptables mangle table.
With the mangle table you can set the ToS /Type of Service) fields telling your box and others to prioritise low latency for services like telnet, ssh.

Don't know how good this works though. Any input to this solution?
