I used up2date to get the latest kernel and apparently the latest kernel headers. These two RPMs were installed:

kernel-2.4.9-31
kernel-headers-2.4.9-31

I used to ntsysv to turn off ipchains because both ipchains and iptables were turned on. I also erased all references to ipchains in /etc/rc.d/rc*.d/K92ipchains.

When i run 'locate ipchains' I get this output

/home/kern/linux/include/linux/netfilter_ipv4/ipchains_core.h
/home/kern/linux/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipchains_core.c
/usr/include/linux/netfilter_ipv4/ipchains_core.h
/usr/sbin/ipchains
/usr/share/doc/ipchains-1.3.10
/usr/share/man/man8/ipchains-restore.8.gz
/usr/share/man/man8/ipchains-save.8.gz
/usr/share/man/man8/ipchains.8.gz
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/netfilter_ipv4/ipchains_core.h
/usr/src/linux/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipchains_core.c
/lib/modules/2.4.7-10/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipchains.o
/lib/modules/2.4.9-31/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipchains.o
/sbin/ipchains
/sbin/ipchains-restore
/sbin/ipchains-save

There doesn't look like any reference to start ipchains. So I am buffled even greater now.

Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of is getting the rpm for 1.2.5 of iptables and trying that otherwise maybe something else is messed up and you could always try upgrading the kernel to the latest release from redhat. Otherwise I would personally try a format and reinstall an try to get rid of ipchains from the start. Have you checked setup to see if ipchains is still in there and is checked or not.
To do that type setup and the command line and see if it is there. Otherwise if you don't uncheck it next reboot it will be back.

Iptables-1.2.5 is not there from RedHat

I really dislike RedHat for that reason just like Samba -2.2.3a that rpm is still not availeble for 7.2

On the site of samba they tell you that you should step to samba 2.2.3a

I think RedHat is a little sloppy with this kind of packages

If you try to install from source al your files get messed up.

If you go and install a rpm not from redhat like icq and redhat has there own up2date will not update that package. failed dependencies.

it sucks a little

That really is the one downsite of redhat i believe (Up2date works great)

Just like balsa, mozilla, galeon, and a lot of other stuff still no update of that packages

If you install the rpm from mozilla then nautilus get screwed up (you can not browse the internet anymore)

So if anyone fron RedHat reads this go to work and give us at least iptables 1.2.5 and samba 2.2.3a

Thats it

I got the rpm for iptables.1.2.5 from an rpm find site. It worked just fine for my router box. I of course have no gui installed and I don't use up2date either.

Ok but i think it is a liitle strange that RedHat still has no package ready for there own up2date system
And iptables is a vital package if you want to run a firewall or something.
Just like samba

I have compiled my kernel again with iptables 1.2.5 because i do not want to mis some vital system packages that my firewall needs.
But i think it should not be doen that way.

Just keep the system up2date

Suse has got it slack debian all the majot distro have iptables and samba 2.2.3a pakages ready for there latest release exept RedHat.

It is a big bummer
