IP masquerading Slack 9.1 to windows 98

I have IP masqurading setup and it was working before from my slack 9.1 to another machine with slack 9.1 sharing internet. I took off slack 9.1 on the other machine and put on win 98 and am currently connected to it to share files with samba.

How to I configure the 98 machine to share internet with my slack 9.1 box (or do I need to change my configuration on my slack machine too??

You need to install TCP/IP for your Win98 network card, and give it the same settings as you did for your previous Slack 9.1 box. Did you use DHCP before or static ip addresses? If the latter, then under Win98 network properties, you need to enter the gateway address (the ip address of your Slack 9.1 box with the IP masquerading), and the ip addresses of your isp DNS nameservers.

Thanks for getting back to me!

I installed TCP/IP and gave it the same settings I was using before with slack... but I still canīt ping internet I was/am using static IP addresses 192.168.0.1 (Slack 9.1/gateway) 192.168.0.2 (Win 98 machine)

I have set the gateway under properties of TCP/IP - remote gateways (On the 98 machine) to 192.168.0.1

Maby there is somthing else I need to have installed under network settings
Any more ideas???

Adam

You mentioned that you set up file sharing via samba, so I assume you can ping from your Slack box to your Win box and vice versa.

You also stated that IP masquerading worked when both boxes had Slack, so I assume the /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall configuration on your gateway is correct.

When you say "can't ping internet", do you mean you cannot ping an external IP address? If so, check the DNS settings on your Windows box, again under network TCP/IP properties. You should have the addresses for your ISP's DNS nameservers defined there. (Obtain the nameserver addresses from the /etc/resolv.conf file on your Slack gateway box.)

Thanks for replying!

Yeah I can ping from my win98 machine to slack and the other way around.
I was trying to ping google.com but with the number 216.239.36.10 ... not with the name (to save confusion for now) I havent bothered trying to setup the DNS on the windows machine yet as I though it was pointless until I could ping internet addresses

Anymore ideas????

.................................................................................................... ............................
UPdate!! I removed my firewall script and installed firestarter.... just to try it out... I can now ping the above address... so now to configure my DNS

Thanks
Adam
