IP Masq-ing under debian
For setting up IP masquerading on my debian box, I read the IP masquerading howto. The document examples are all for RH, which rices some debian specific networking issues.
The example rc.firewall files have to be put in /etc/rc.d. This directory doesn't exist in my debian, so where else should I put it?
Nevertheless, I inspected the rc.firewall script recognizing four sections:
1) Setting script variables
2) Modprobing the necessary modules like ip_tables etc.
3) Changing critical setting like ip_forward, ip_dynaddr erc.
4) The actual rule-set using iptable command.
On 2: Isn't it cleaner to add the necessary modules in /etc/modules? Maybe using modconf?
On 3: I suppose this can be done in /etc/network/options as well. How exactly? I haven't got a man-page available on the options file. Where is documentation on this one or do you know how to do it?
On 4: Can this be included in any standard file, making the entire script redundant in Debian?
I would appreciate some backgrounds in this one.
