I am trying to set up a home intranet. I already set up SAMBA over WINS as file server on a server here at home without any problems. I also have a remotely hosted server as a web/mail server. Since I can't run my own mail server with an residential ISP, I thought about setting up my own intranet mail server and use fetchmail(?) to periodically poll the mail from my remote server. The idea behind that is to have a faster mail retrieval over the LAN when at home, but also access on the remote server while I am away. My final goal is also to set up some sort of groupware (Zimbra?) that has all my information on my home server, while replicating everything to the remote server. What are my options? I probably need to install bind and an MTA on my home server, right?

Maybe move (or copy and then delete from the isp) the mail to your server and access it via HTTP with squirrel mail or something would work. I think you would end up with sync. problems trying to keep the mail in two places. Not to mention that many isp's like to charge for extra disk usage which will happen if you keep all your mail on their server.
