Internet Troubles
Ok, so heres the story:
I use Yahoo SBC DSL, which has worked up until a router had to be replaced. The router is connected to the modem, my computer, and another computer running windows. Before the router was replaced, I didn't have to do anything, eth0 just worked from the beginning. Now, when it tries to start it up, it just takes a long time, though it does not give an error. Help would be appreciated, thanks. |

Did you have DHCP running on the old router? Is it running on the new router? Can you browse the internet with the Windows machine? What distro are you using? Where is it hanging on start up? Sorry so many questions.
|
No, it's not a dual boot.
yes, the internet works on the windows machine using RH 8.0 it hangs when activating eth0 and maybe I'm confused about what a router is. The one that my computer is connected to is an ethernet broadband router, and I'm guessing that your thinking of a whole computer maybe? Anyways, when I installed RH, I set it to use DHCP, if that means anything. |
Any hints when monitoring your log?
# Watch error messages as they happen (sysklog needed) as root, tail -f /var/log/messages (shows last 10 lines, use a number in front of f for more lines) # Redhat links RedHat Linux Manuals Maximum RPM rpmfind Easier software management: apt4rpm - Red Carpet RedHat 8.0 Tips & Tricks # Redhat 8.0 configuration commands Configure soundcard: redhat-config-soundcard Configure X server: redhat-config-xfree86 Configure network: redhat-config-network |
tail -f /var/log/messages shows that eth0 worked, the ip was determined successfully, and yet, the internet still doesn't work. I'm wishing for at least an error message.
I really have no idea what to do, so thanks for helping. |
Perhaps you need to add your ISPs dns numbers to /etc/resolv.conf?
|
How could I find these dns numbers?
|
Call your ISP service number and ask for them if they aren't listed on their support pages.

I can't even really access information on the account because I don't have the password. But it worked before the ethernet router was replaced without having to do anything so I doubt thats the problem.
A big problem is I don't know how that worked. It just did. I don't understand how a new ethernet router could affect anything. |
Just found out that I have the nameservers already in /etc/resolv.conf.

I went to the internet and all I got was this stinkin' dialup modem
I don't have experience with routers, so all I can suggest is :study:
