Internet Through Router with Mandrake?

I'm a real newbie to Linux, I have an extra computer here and downloaded Mandrake and installed. (V 9.1)

I'm working through everything fine, and get done with installation, then to desktop. Well, that was fairly simple now wasn't it!

The only thing I needed then, was internet. I have no clue where to go to set this up. I'm using a cable connection from a router. Will I need to include router settings etc? Can somebody help me step by step to get my interent connection up? I've tried going to Mandrake Control, and through a network setup (It automatically detected things for me, thought I had it, but it didn't end up working) It's detecting my eth card, so I don't think thats a problem. (I will post what network program I used and thought had working tommorow)

Also, noticed that my CD-Rom was not working. It installed Linux flawlessly, but when I tried to get into it, it didn't fuction, couldn't see any contents etc. It gave me an error, I will post again tommorow what it is along with the network program.

network: How is your setup? Do you know about IP / DHCP and so on?
normally, the network card will be identified correctly, but if you have a small network, i would assume there are static IPs? Then you have to configure it by turning off DHCP and then set up a own, static IP.
Then you have to set DNS and Gateway to the IP of the router. That's it...
Does this help? Ask again if not.

CD-ROM: Do you know about how to mount a drive?
Do you have supermount running?
You could in a console do
Code:
less /etc/fstab
and post the output here... (type 'q' to exit).
AND (the better solution since you can learn more...) type
Code:
man mount
and read and try to understand...
else: google around, search through here....
and if nothing helps, you are welcome to ask again... ;-)
