internet really really slow

My internet runs really slow on SUSE 9.1, at about 305k/s according to bandwidthplace.com. But on windows xp it runs at 5M/s. why is there such a huge difference??

internet slow on linux/fast on windows

I am running SUSE 9.1 and I my internet speed, according to bandwidthplace.com is 300k/s. On windows I am getting 5M/s. Whats the deal and how do i get it goign faster?? I am new to linux and have only been using it for a few days.

Try another bandwidth meter website..

...Different times of the day means differents speeds for any high speed internet technologies.

That means its never constant.

If you google around for websites mesuring bandwidth speed you will soon see that each of them report slighly different results and sometimes very different.

At different times of the day and also at different times of the week, traffic will vary whether its cable or xDSL.

Don't worry about that, I have been using Windows (all kinds) and many distros of Linux for many years and network speed as never been an issue. The OS is not the issue.

Unless the drivers for your LAN card are inadequate, but I doubt that since Ethernet protocols are pretty standard all around and have been for a while.

Exactly what kind of internet connection do you have! 5M/s! My god!. Or do you mean its telling you your total speed is 5 mbps which is not the same as 5 Mbps. 5mbps would be, i dunno... 700kbps? So your internet is running at half speed in linux? Unless your really mean 305k/s.... which would be sad since that's only the equivilant of 5 dialup connections...

I am on a ethernet connection at a college. Its 5M/s. i've gotten it up to 7 but now it runs about about 5 on windows. and its still 300ish on linux.

I have the 3COM 3C-900B ethernet card. I dont have DSL, i have an actual ethernet connection that runs very steady b/c its on a school network. I've heard that 3com cards have problems with linux but that may only be with Fedora.

Please do not post the same thread more than once. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

According to bandwidthplace.com my 3com card is getting 3.3 megabits per second. :D

EDIT:
And that's on two boxes: one Debian and one Slackware.

What's most likely happening is you don't have the colleges DNS servers in /etc/resolve.conf
issue this command and see if there is any output:
Code:

su -c "cat /etc/resolv.conf"
If they aren't speak with your Network administrator and find out what the DNS servers are. Then, put them in /etc/resolv.conf
