Internet problems on LAN, cant ping certain websites, help please

Hi there, I need some help.

I have have a computer dual booting win2k and suse 9.1 which is hooked up to a LAN. Under Linux Internet works, however not all of it, I cannot ping and hence cannot access certain websites, slashdot.org or hotmail.com for example. Now if I boot to Windows, these websites load and work without any problems.

Ive tried disabling the Suse firewall, that did not help. Ive tried Mandrake 10.0 and Fedora Core 2, same problem, still cant access or ping the same websites, no matter what the distro.

Any ideas or suggestions? Help please!

Hi -

I'd need more details to understand the real problem, but a few notes:

1. In general, if an Internet connection works for Windows, that some connection should work equally well for Linux (and vice versa).

2. If you can surf to a web site with your browser (using HTTP), that doesn't necessarily mean that you can "ping" the same site (using ICMP). Many sites block ICMP as a security precaution.

However, if you can ping a site from Windows, then you should be able to ping the same site from Linux.

3. My best guess is that perhaps you're failing to resolve the site names.

Please double-check if you have the same DNS servers configured on Linux
as you have configured on Windows, in the same order.

4. "Traceroute" (Linux) and "tracert" (Windows) might also be useful to troubleshoot the problem.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Your .. PSM

You can't ping slashdot.org. They have a firewall that blocks pings. You get "destination port unreachable".
