You either compiled your network card driver as module or you haven't included support for your network card at all. First tell us what's the model of your network card.

Can you post the output of
Code:
# lsmod
just to make sure the module is in fact loaded.

bruse, this is your ethernet card:

01:0c.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

you need to include support for this device in your kernel, either built-in or as a module. if you know the name of the module, try adding it with modprobe:

modprobe real-8139

that will only work if you built and installed the module though. if you didn't, then it's time to recompile. (and please note, real-8139 is NOT the actual module you need, i just made up that name).

and thtr2k you should probably start your own thread and include info on how you configured eth0 - do you have a static ip? or do you use dhcp?

alright, well use www.google.com/linux to find the name of the module (driver) that you need for your realtek card. i'm pretty sure it's 8139too or 8139cp. then open a terminal, like gnome-terminal or xterm, and type:

su
(enter your superuser password)
modprobe 8139too
lsmod

instead of 8139too you want to put the name of your module. now, this should work if you use your old kernel. as far as your new kernel, it depends on how you configured it when you compiled it. did you include support for your hardware? if so, did you build it into the kernel or include it as a module?

now, the rest of the question is: did you configure your net access? are you using dhcp or a static ip address? did you set that up? if so, how?

sounds like you didn't include support for your filesystem this time. that's got to be built in to the kernel. i hope you kept your old kernel around. boot up a live cd and mount the hard drive like this:

mkdir /mnt/hd
mount -t ext3 /dev/hda2 /mnt/hd

then edit lilo to include a reference to your old kernel so you can keep hacking at your new kernel. edit /etc/lilo.conf, here's mine:

Code:
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  root = /dev/hda2
  label = Linux
  read-only
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10
  root = /dev/hda2
  label = 2.6.10
  read-only
# Linux bootable partition config ends
where /boot/vmlinux-2.6.10 is my custom compiled kernel, and /boot/vmlinuz is a symbolic link to /boot/vmlinux-2.4.26, which is my default kernel.

and when you're done, save and close the file. then type lilo and hit enter.

hmm. i don't know what those inet6 addresses are...did you put those in on purpose? your ip addresses are funny numbers, are you using dhcp or a static ip? are you behind a router? maybe you haven't set your default gateway. my router's address is 192.168.1.1 so i type:

route -n

to see my routing table. if there's no gateway listed, then i can add one like this:

route add default gw 192.168.1.1

but that's only if you're using a gateway. i can't quite tell from your ip addresses, but i'm guessing you are.
