Internet Connection Sharing With Windows and Kubuntu
 

I have 2 computers in my house. Here are the details of each:

Computer 1
OS: Windows XP Pro
I use dialup to connect to the internet
I have a onboard Ethernet Port

Computer 2
OS: Kubuntu 6.06 LTS
Trying to share internet connection with computer 1
I have a PCI Ethernet Card


I do not have a router and I don't feel like getting one.
I have a ethernet cord

I am trying to get computer 2 to use the internet on computer 1. I have been trying alot of stuff but nothing seems to work. Anybody have any tips?

Buy a router

Assuming that both machines have their network devices configured correctly..

You need a crossover cable between the machines. Not a regular ethernet cable, a crossover cable.

Then configure windoze to share internet connections. I've done it with broadband, not sure how that looks to bridge a ethernet connection with a modem connection. Use windoze configuration wizard.

Or buy a little 5 port $20 switch. Then you use a standard ethernet cable from the machine to the switch.

if you have ICS enabled on winxp all you need to do on the linux box is to plug a crossover cable in btw and run dhclient or pump . Since ICS enables a dhcp server on the WIN box. This way all should be configured using dhcp and you wont have to do anything.

A couple of corrections: If you have a gigabit ethernet adapter on either or both machines, a crossover is not necessary. The gigabit adapter uses all eight pins for communication instead of just four like Fast Ethernet or Ethernet. It reconfigures itself automatically for a connection directly to another adapter. However, a crossover is needed if your ethernet is not gigabit. (I discovered this when doing experiments in making a Gigabit Crossover.) Also, there is no DHCP server on Windows XP. The reason that other Windows machines can get an IP address without configuration is because Microsoft has built in automatic IP addressing. It attempts to make the best connection without any information on the network, but it is almost always in the 192.168.*.* range. Because of this, you will have to configure the IP address on the linux box manually.
