Question internet connection sharing with SuSE 8.1

I'm sure that this question has been asked and answered a million times, but none of my searches here or elsewhere were able to provide me any help.

I am running SuSE 8.1 with an ADSL (pppoe) internet connection, and I am dying to get my other networked computers to share that connection.

I've tried this script, modified for all of my local settings of course, without any succesfull results. I can see incoming udp ping requests from my network, but they die at my gateway (the SuSE 8.1 system).

I have never messed with IP Tables before, and the IP-Masquerading FAQ leaves me doing the baboon ass scratch. I'm hoping that somebody might have a simple fix for me....

As always, thanks in advance.

What happens if you setup a dchp server in your suse and let the other machines pick up their info from there?

I haven't tried a DHCP server yet, right now I have a 192.168.0.0/24 network. My gateway is 192.168.0.3 (As my roommates computer has always been .1) I don't see that causing any problems however. Do you think DHCP would make a difference?

thanks

You are probably best using SuSEfirewall2 to do this, it is in YaST2 under security/firewall. Make sure you tick the 'forward and masquerade' option (read all the help info. which runs down the left hand panel), and it should share your connection fine.

I wouldn't bother with DHCP, it is much more hassle than it's worth for a small home network.

... Go figure. I could have sworn that I tried that suse firewall forward and masquerade option before without succes. Well to make a long story short it worked this time. I had some problems with it booting improperly and killing any network connections a week or two back. Let's hope that with the masquerading working now that the rest of it will roll too.

Thanks alot :-)
