Internet backup

I have a cheap hosting plan with my own domain name and I use it only to have an Internet backup of my main machine.

This plan does not support rsync.

My question is how can I make a backup of only the files that have changed? Is it possible and useful?

So far I tar 4 main directories and ftp the resulting files which is not very efficient.

Thank you for your help.

Buy a cheap system (or retask an old machine), install Linux, setup a RAID1 mirror, and place it at a friend or family members home. Rsync over SSH to that machine for backup. I suggest performing the initial rsync locally, to save the time and bandwidth.

Thank you for the suggestion but it is not practical in this case.

Not practical in what way; what are your constraints? Otherwise we're just guessing non-productively.

The distance to the nearest such location (friend or family) is 800 km, so if there is a need for me to access this machine, I'll have to travel 1600 km. There is also the fact that the data is confidential, not that the friend or family cannot be trusted but it is not reasonable to leave that sort of data potentially available to anybody.
