Internal loopback test process

Hi all,

I met a network debug problem on an embedded board.
The framework couldn't ping outside.

CPU Gigabit Controller <-> PHY <-> Gigabit Switcher
| <-> outside network [Outside]

I'd like to check where the problem could be. One option
was to use loopback way to detect element itself. So I
wanna to set PHY as internal loopback mode and test it.
But after this adjustment, how to check it OK? Is there
any special utility do this job? like set PHY mode and send out package and check packages later.

Ummm, I am new to loopback feild. So just point me any valuable site or doc to me?

Thanks in advance,

cdcshu
