I'm not too up on all the LDAP/Active Directory stuff, but here's the situation:

We're setting up a dual-boot linux setup for a bunch of computers at my school. We want all logons on the linux boxes to be authenticated against the central windows server (for example, jdoe should be able to log in with 'pass' in both a windows and linux environment). We also want that person's shares (smb I think) to be mounted as the user's home directory, just as they would on a windows machine. Again, I'm not up on all the terminology, but I would assume that the windows server is running activedirectory. I've tried looking for tutorials, but most of them seem to involve some server-side stuff. All we want our linux boxes to do is to appear as a windows machine to the server, authenticate, and then mount the shares.

Is this possible? If so, can someone either give a brief rundown or point me to a tutorial?

you need Samba on the linux box for this.
On Mepis this is quite simple simce there are bundled samba tools in it. For other distros I dont know. Though search on Samba How Tos.
