Installation over network via ssh?

Hello,

Here is the setup I have:

Computer_A has Linux installed. It also has the installation_medium - either CD/DVD or on the hard drive.

Computer_B has Windows installed.

I want to have Computer_B login to Computer_A via ssh. I want to then install the program (.exe) on the installation_medium mounted on Computer_A onto Computer_B.

Computer_A will be controlling Computer_B via remote desktop if that makes any difference.

I think you want SCP or SFTP to do what you are after. Download winscp on the windows machine and use that to connect into the linux box using an SFTP connection, should work fine.

Would that require setting up an ftp server - or would the already running ssh daemon handle that?

I believe the ssh daemon handles SCP, not sure about SFTP. Winscp will drop down to scp if it doesn't have access to SFTP anyways.

SCP and SFTP both use ssh, but Windows won't allow you to "install programs over" either one of them. You would have to copy the file locally to Windows (which you can do with either SCP or SFTP), then run the installer locally.

Another way to do it would be to setup Samba on the Linux box and share the directory that the install media is mounted on via Samba.
