Install printer connected to Belkin router USB port.

I am trying to install an HP-Deskjet-1050-J410-series printer (connected to my Belkin Router F9K1102v1 USB port) on my desktop pc running Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I can not use the Belkin installation disc on Ubuntu. I have tried to get information from the Belkin forum, but they do not help. Can anyone please help?

Can you please tell me which one of these options I should try to use?

More than one ought to work. If you have other windows systems on this lan, you might go with samba.

frankbell 06-23-2014 08:54 PM

Do you have HPLIP installed? It's in the repos; note that the GUI frontend (hp-toolbox on the command line) is a separate package from the base HPLIP package.

I have not used HPLIP to install a printer connected to a router via USB. My printer is directly wired to the network with a static ip address, but HPLIP has not failed me yet.

Edit: You can install an HP printer from the GUI (pretty straightforward) as user or from the command line using the command hp-setup as root. If you need to tell hp-setup the ip address of the printer, the command is hp-setup -i [ip address]. The hp-setup man page is refreshingly straighforward and includes examples(!).

Thank you Jefro and Frankbell for your helpfull replies.

I have installed hplip as you sugested. Device discovery will not locate my printer connected to Belkin router USB port. I have tried manual settings, but I do not know the printer ip address (will this be the same as my router ip address? 192.168.2.1 ) or network name. Please help.

How is the router sharing the printer?

frankbell 06-24-2014 08:15 PM

My HP Printer has a way of viewing and setting the IP address from the printer's configuration menus; never having used a USB-router connection, I have no idea how that's configured. Maybe you can find something in there that will help. HP has manuals available here.

Normally using Windows I would install the belkin router installation disc which gives access to the Belkin USB Print & Storage Centre. I have done this with a Windows laptop which works fine. Unfortunately I can not install the Belkin installation disc to my Ubuntu system, subsequently I can not install the printer.

Return To Windows

Thanks again for your help, I have read the HP manuals but I can't find anything about how to access the ip address. Sad as it is, it looks like I will have to give up with Linux and return to Windows.

From past threads it appears the printer feature is not supported. I believe the software configures a virtual USB port so the normal network options listed above will not work.

jefro 06-25-2014 03:14 PM

Does this dopy router have a web based admin page?

Past threads related to this problem are marked as (solved), but I can not find anything that will help me?

When you go into the admin page does it offer any printer choices. The devices like this I've seen tend to have an embedded linux running a way to share a printer based on the menu choices.

Even though threads are as marked solved does not necessarily mean a successful outcome...

You could try adding a samba printer via cups. You need to install samba if it already and use a printer URL of smb://192.168.1.1/printer_name (Change values of IP address and printer name to your settings).
