install kernel mod for smc9425tx or Dlink DGE500T

We are trying to install ethernet cards onto new linux boxes. In the past, with the DLink DE-500, this has been trivial -- it just worked on Redhat 8 and 9. Now we are using Fedora Core 2 and Red Hat EE 3 which is pretty much RedHat 9.

For Red Hat EE 3 we are running 2.4.21
The new cards are not recognized at all. Both DLink and SMC claim to support a kernel module called sk98. SMC packages two such modules on the CD, one for 2.2, and one for 2.4 kernels. When we unpack the 2.4 version, the directions read, essentially: untar it, cd to the directory, and make. That seems easy enough....

The resulting error message is

skdim.c
In function 'GetCurrentSystemLoad
skdim.c:315 'kstat' undeclared

Both companies, by the way, claim Linux is unsupported, which they do NOT state in their documentation. Both claim to work in Linux, so this is at the very least extremely dishonest. I don't expect telephone support, but to be able to email with a driver problem seems pretty basic.

The SMC specifically is in the Linux HOWTO claiming to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having a similiar problem installing the linksys eg1032v2 NIC on a RHEL 3 machine.
It appears I don' t have the kstat package/code and I have not had any luck finding where I can get it.

Any help?

patched code

syskonnect.com is the site for the driver. I have not verified whether it worked, but after much prodding SMC did respond to our VAR and in turn got syskonnect to do a new driver. In the interim, however, we simply swapped cards to an Intel e1000 chipset, which is supported in the kernel.

The intel is double the price, but works without modification.

Good luck!
