Advantageous in what sense? IMAP and POP3 are opposites but not equals: IMAP has more features and capabilities. IMAP accounts keep email in a central location, POP3 clients download email to local storage. IMAP requires a persistent network connection (one per accessed account) and has different network traffic volume requirements (low bandwidth, kinda constant) compared to POP3 (bandwidth peakage on retrieval). You don't need to be a big company to use IMAP. Centralised stuff is easier to manage and backup.
