ifconfig: command not found

Hi,

I'm new to Linux, trying to set up internet access thru an ethernet card, but there's some problem with the eth0 interface. trying to use ifconfig in root mode, got the message:

bash: ifconfig: command not found

same as route command. My installation is RedHat. Would anyone kindly point out what's wrong? Any document or links as regard to set up high-speed internet on Linux?

Thanks in advance!

You probably don't ahve /sbin in your path. Assuming you su'ed to root - log out then su with:
su -

This will create a new login shell for root and load root's path variable. You could also just use:
/sbin/ifconfig

Thanks. It's stange, even I go into /sbin directory and type ifconfig, it still says "command not found"... only when I type "/sbin/ifconfig" in any directory allows me to use this command... anyway, the eth0 interface looks ok now. what's next?

The eth0 IP is 192.168.1.8,
default gateway is 192.168.1.1.

I probably will go thru this gateway to the outside world. What should I specify in the route table?

Thanks!

If you want to run it directly from /sbin you will need to use:
cd /sbin
./ifconfig

Your default route "0.0.0.0" should be the gateway address:
route -n
