IFConfig command

I installed a fresh AS 2.1 on my pentinum II box. When I do ifconfig -a command I have nothing on my eth0. I check the /etc/sysconfig/network & ifcfg-etho files and I see my static address. I restart the network (/etc/init.d/network restart), still can not ping. Any clues to solve this issue?

I was reading another post. I check the driver on dmesg and found an entry for 3c59x. It also have 3c59x on /etc/modules.conf.

well if eth0 exists then it is only a config file error.
so check your config file.
then type ifup /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
this will spit out an error message.

Also does the command
ip address tell u it's ip, if so then it is a network problem.

I spoke to soon....it works but when I reboot the machine I have to retype the command ifup /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. Any way to fix the file without typing the command?
