I get all my DHCP details through, but can't ping the server
I can't ping anything for that matter, including the network switch
I am running slackware 8.0 (just installed)
my linux box is 192.168.1.11
my server is 192.168.1.10 (win 2k)
I have an additional client at 192.168.1.40 (win xp)
I have a switch at 192.168.1.1
all machines on subnet 192.168.1.0/24 (mask 255.255.255.0)
I have checked the following, all of appear to be normal:
ifconfig -a
/var/...... logs
/proc/sys/net/..... settings
route
netstat
ping 192.168.1.11 from 192.168.1.11
ping 127.0.0.1 from 192.168.1.11
ipchains (all allowed)
tcpdump also happily reports traffic on the network
if I attempt to ping outwards 192.168.1.11 -> 192.168.1.1
or 192.168.1.11 -> 192.168.1.40
the attempt just hangs (not even unreachable!)
and arp -a indicates that no arp lookup has succeeded
if I attempt to ping in the opposite direction (from windows) I get
a succession of "request timed out"s, arp however shows that
the MAC addr of the linux box has been found, the address
matches that reported by ifconfig on the linux machine
following an attempted ping, if I run netstat -s
it reports that a number of ICMP "destination unreachable"s
have occurred
windows 2k ran with no problems on the same hardware
and I have tried changing the NIC, cables and the switch,
however I don't believe these to be at fault due to the
successful tcpdump
