Whats up. I originally came here because im having that problem with SMB. Nautillus cannot contact the Master Browser, there was a thread for it here. I did what the thread instructed to do, IE edit smb.conf and change linux to be the master browser, the default browser, and the OS to, umm i dont remember like 66. Pardon me not describing the problem a little better, but I figure you guys know whats wrong already. Anyhow, when I went back to Network servers, there was the windows PC, but i couldnt access it, it was just there in nautilus. Then upon reboot, the same " cannot contact master browser" was there again. The most frustrating thing with this is, when i first installed redhat 9, i was able to access my windows shares no problem. I have tinkered with network settings like hostname (which stopped me from accessing the windows shares), but have put it back to the way it was, or at least i think i did. anyways, if anyone can shed light on this, it would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys.

Hello,
I just moved your thread to Linux-Networking. Your question fits better here. Member Intro forum is good to say 'hello', but questions should go to other forums.
Well... thanks for the reply.. he's the situation-
I've got a LAN here. Cable modem -> Lynksys router-> 1 xp desktop ( the one with the shares), 1 mac osx box, 1 redhat 9 box, and moms laptop i cant fock with. I set up the xp desktop with several shares, which i can access from the mac. ( back when i used os9, i used the program DAVE, and when i switched to osx, i could still access them). When i first installed redhat 9, i was able to access the shares by going to Network servers. Then at one point, i changed the hostname of the redhat box, and oopsie, couldnt access shares anymore. So i gave it no hostname again (i forgot how i did this cause im a total newbie). and i was able to access the shares again. Then all of a sudden, i cant anymore, no more shares. Yet the mac can still access them, and i can even see the laptops shares when thats running. the linux box doesnt wanna play nice with the other puters on the block. its possible i focked something up but i generally dont mess with config files aside from looking at them. error message says it cannot contact the master browser. i hope that was sufficient info, if not, ill try n scoop up some more for ya. thanks for the assistance.

hey whats up, sorry for the long delay. Yes i most certainly can ping the xp box. I dont think its a tcp/ip issue, its online, everyone can ping each other, i think i messed up some sort of configuration on the redhat 9 box. if u know of a link or something to explain nicely how SMB works, for example, whats a master browser, that would be great, cause i never see any practical explination of smb, or maybe im looking in the wrong places. anyways, any suggestions woulf kick arse. thanks again.
