http vs. ftp


What protocol is better to use for download?

FTP is generaly better if you're just downloading files. But it all depends on what you want to do, and what you need.

I've heard that FTP is faster than HTTP at downloading files.

depends where you download from.
IE would open ftp connection for over a minute to offer you a list of files.
in genereal when you use
wget, I haven't noticed any difference in download speed
